About She Bop

Evy Cowan and Jeneen Doumitt opened She Bop in November of 2009 with the objective of creating an adult boutique specializing in non-toxic body-safe toys, exceptional books, female- and queer- friendly DVDs and quality sensuality products. She Bop gives Portland an adult atmosphere that goes beyond the traditional sex store experience by actively pursuing a commitment to sexual education and conscious business practices while also offering a fun, safe, comfortable and sex-positive environment for people of all genders, sexual orientations and social backgrounds.

Who Should Come to She Bop?

She Bop is female-friendly, not female-only. She Bop was created for a diverse community with an emerging personal and social awareness of healthy sexuality as an important component to everyday life. This includes all varieties of personal identifiers such as gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, age, marital status – whoever you are, you are welcome in our store!

While many people think the name She Bop means that only “she”s can “bop” in the shop, our name is not intended to be about gender. It is actually inspired by Evy and Jeneen's love of their 80s-idol Cyndi Lauper who sang about masturbation and sexual empowerment in her song titled “She Bop”. As we believe that there are a multitude of gender-identities and personal pronouns for people to identify with, the name She Bop is not about the female pronoun but is about the message of sexual freedom behind the song.

From the products we carry to the way we talk to our customers about them, we strive to use gender-neutral pronouns as much as possible to avoid making assumptions about how our customers identify themselves and their partners. We are more than happy to adjust our language to accommodate any specifically preferred pronouns – just let us know!

How We Bop Locally and Sustainably

She Bop reduces our impact on the environment by offering eco-friendly and local products when possible. We offer a large selection of rechargeable toys, organic lubricants and products made from sustainable materials. We use 100% recycled bags and we recycle packing material in-house by sharing them with our small-business neighbors or reusing the packing materials from our incoming shipments to pack our outgoing shipments.

Supporting our local community is also very important to She Bop. We carry many handmade and locally-sourced sexuality products and make an effort to purchase other services we use such as our T-shirt and sticker printing and even our phone/internet and credit card processing services from Portland-area companies.

We've given thousands of dollars to local non-profit organizations by raising money during our frequent in-store fundraisers and by donating gift certificates and goodie bags to outside fundraising events throughout the city, partnering frequently with Portland's feminist and LGBTQI organizations, low-cost health clinics and college campuses.

Through renting out our instructional DVDs and offering sexuality-focused educational classes and workshops at an affordable cost, She Bop helps keep our community sexually happy, healthy and informed. More information about our community support, classes and events, DVD rentals and after hours parties can be found at the bottom of this page.

Who We Are

As a small, independently-owned, single brick-and-mortar store, you'll find either Evy or Jeneen working in the shop every day we're open along with one of their two employees, A.J. or Yana.

Evy brings a green thumb and holistic health approach to She Bop thanks to her undergrad degree in Wildlife Science, a year's experience on an Americorps environmental restoration field team and six years of work at a local Naturopathic and Acupuncture clinic. Dedicated to creating a sex-positive impact socially as well as physically, Evy utilizes her graduate studies in Women's Studies and Philosophy to bring thorough considerations of gender, race, class and modern feminism to She Bop's product-selection, store environment and customer interactions.

Jeneen has years of experience in customer service which is reflected in She Bop’s informed, personalized style of interacting with our shoppers. A studied artist in both ceramic sculpture and intaglio printmaking, Jeneen uses her strong ties to Portland’s creative community to source many of our local products like a collection of ceramic dildos by Porcelain Pleasures, handmade toy bags by Appetite, DIY penis-cloning kits by Empire Labs and bondage rope hand-dyed by Shiny Shiny. Jeneen's inter-artist relationships and eye for aesthetics keeps She Bop stocked with beautiful, locally-made items purchased from people we know by name.

A.J. (aka Amory Jane) received a Master's Degree from Lewis & Clark College where she studied psychology, couples counseling, sex therapy, and LGBTQI studies. She is now an emerging blog writer and relationship coach who specializes in working with polyamorous individuals and couples in open relationships. When she’s not behind the She Bop counter, you can find her hosting Portland trivia nights like She Bop sponsored Sex Trivia or teaching workshops such as Unpacking the Gender Box, Sex Ed for Teens, Ethical Non-Monogamy and She Bop’s very own The Joys of Toys, a sex toys 101 class held regularly here in the shop.

Yana completed her undergrad degree in LGBTQI community studies and queer theory which included an internship at Carol Queen’s Center for Sex and Culture, numerous sexual health workshops and a year’s study of San Francisco’s lesbian bar culture. She first discovered her love for talking to strangers about sex toys while working as a Good Vibrations sex educator/sales associate and is overjoyed to continue the trend in her new city of Portland here at She Bop. When she’s not sharing it with She Bop customers, Yana’s sexpertise is regularly published in her weekly sex column, The V-Spot, Curve magazine, Bitch magazine and here on the She Bop blog.

Alyssa, in between sips of coffee, manages She Bop's blog and social media outlets. In college, she wheedled her professors into letting her write research papers on sex toys and feminist porn, and even produced a low-budget sex ed video. After earning her BA in English, she promptly translated her knack for writing about Chaucer into writing about sex toys. Her other great joys include web design, cats, singing, trying new recipes, and bad reality TV shows. She also writes for Tristan Taormino's blog on non-monogamy, Opening Up.

Recent fundraisers have benefited Bitch Media, the Portland-based nonprofit organization best known for publishing the magazine Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture, Bradley Angle and In Other Words Feminist Bookstore and Resource Center. She Bop has also donated sex toys and organic lubricant to Quest Center for Integrative Health, an organization that supports low income women living with HIV, for a class on healthy sexuality. In addition, She Bop hosted a workshop, with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, for queer women focusing on safe sex. She Bop has also donated countless gift certificates to a variety of organizations for special events and fundraisers.
