10% Tuesdays in January for In Other Words

In Other Words

Throughout the month of January, 10% of our proceeds made on Tuesdays will be donated to In Other Words, a non-profit, volunteer-run, feminist community center in NE Portland. Their mission is to support, enrich, and empower the feminist community through literature, art, and educational and cultural events.

In Other Words’ bookstore includes books on feminism, queer and transgender studies, sexuality, and activism/politics, as well as alternative children’s books that are not easily found at other bookstores. Their resource center offers information on topics such as health and wellness, therapy and counseling, sexual and reproductive help, transgender issues, LGBTQ support and advocacy, birth and parenting, education, housing, activism and social change, and places to contact in crisis situations.

In Other Words also supports local artists, craftspeople, musicians, performers, and writers by providing a venue for events and a space for selling art. They are one of the few spaces in Portland where artists and musicians can hold events for free and where people can attend all-ages events for low, sliding scale costs.

Most recently, In Other Words has created a free lending library, which enables everyone to find radical books in a space that is accessible to all economic demographics. Go sign up for a library card today, and come visit us on any Tuesday in January to support In Other Words!

Help save In Other Words

In Other Words

We love In Other Words. This month, they turn 21 years old, and that’s 21 years of being an amazing feminist community space and resource. Their storefront serves as a book store, lending library, and venue for feminist events. Each January, we donate 10% of our sales on Tuesdays to them. But In Other Words is in dire straights right now, and we wish it wasn’t so.

In Other Words is facing capacity deficits and are seriously considering closing their doors. Each month, they need at least $5,000 just to make ends meet. As a non-profit, they are entirely volunteer-run and rely on donations. To stay open well into 2015, they need help. They’ve set up a crowdfunding campaign with the goal of $20,000.

As they write on the crowdfunding page, they don’t make a bunch of dough just because they were on Portlandia.

The question we get most often is, “but don’t you make zillions of dollars off of the TV show Portlandia?!” The short answer is: NOPE. Far from it. Unfortunately, the fact that the TV show Portlandia features a regular feminist bookstore parody does not provide us with any substantial revenue flow and Portlandia-related donations are far from enough to pay our bills.

You can help In Other Words at this juncture in three ways: contribute to the campaign, sign up for a volunteer position at the space by emailing volunteer@inotherwords.org, or apply to join their board of directors at humanresources@inotherwords.org.

On November 8th, there will be a public community meeting about whether In Other Words has increased their volunteer base and received enough donations to stay in business. Please consider donating or volunteering to keep this vital organization running. The video below, “Feminism Matters Now More Than Ever,” is a good reminder of why we need In Other Words.

About the non-profit organizations

Q Center is a wonderful LGBTQ community center just around the corner from us in North Portland. Their mission is to increase the visibility of and foster connection within metropolitan Portland’s LGBTQ community. The center builds public awareness and support, and celebrates LGBTQ diversity through art, culture, and collaborative community programming.

Portland Women’s Crisis Line is a hugely important organization that offers 24/7 support to survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. They offer services such as safety planning, peer support, crisis intervention, needs assessments, and referrals to community resources.

Bradley Angle offers survivors of domestic and sexual violence options for safety, empowerment, healing and hope, while collaborating with local communities to create social change. Their services include a 24-hour crisis line, transitional housing, support groups, and community-based advocacy.

Bitch Media is the nonprofit organization best known for publishing the magazine Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture. Bitch Media’s mission is to provide and encourage an engaged, thoughtful feminist response to mainstream media and popular culture. They are a fresh, revitalizing voice in contemporary feminism, one that promotes activism and impels social change.

In Other Words has been serving the Portland community as a feminist bookstore, a low-cost and safe events space, and as a community resource center for the past 17 years. It supports, enriches, and empowers communities through educational and cultural events, art and literature.
